Saint Paul Midway/Frogtown Collection

During the civil unrest following George Floyd’s murder, The Midway/Frogtown neighborhoods of Saint Paul along University Avenue saw both solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and significant property damage. It is worth noting that Frogtown is historically a working class immigrant neighborhood. And Frogtown is a contemporary working class immigrant neighborhood. University Ave in Saint Paul is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the Twin Cities metro with many Hmong, Vietnamese, East-African, Thai, Mexican-American, African-American, Chinese-American, Cambodian, and American-Indian residents and businesses.

This is a large collaborative work. I chose to 3D scan all of these murals as one big piece since the murals weave into each other in interesting ways. I may decide to split these up in the future and focus on each individual mural as a stand alone piece, but for right now I wanted to show the online audience how these murals look in situ as they were painted.

These murals explore many themes including: self love, unity, racial harmony, community building, missing and murdered indigenous women, black beauty, non-euro-centric beauty, love, empathy, trans rights, and domestic violence prevention. I think this is a good example of how intersectional the Black Lives Matter social movement is.
